MUMBAI: After an overnight lull, Mumbai witnessed another spell of showers and heavy rain in different parts of the city and suburbs, with many low-lying areas submerged, officials said here on Friday.
City areas of Colaba, Marine Lines, Mumbai Central, Byculla, Dadar, Parel, Worli, Bandra, Kurla, Sion, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Andheri, Mulund, Jogeshwari, Borivali and Dahisar were lashed by intermittent heavy rain or showers.
The downpour disrupted traffic movement with massive snarls in the city, suburbs, the two highways touching the city and arterial roads, while the Andheri and Dahisar subways experienced waterlogging for some time.
The suburban local train networks functioned normally as the railway tracks were not waterlogged, even as Mumbai remains under an Orange alert for Friday and Saturday.
However, one section of the Central Railway's Harbour Line was suspended at 2.45 p.m. between Wadala-Mankhurd as a safety precaution owing to heavy rain.
Since Thursday night till 8 a.m., the rainfall recorded in Mumbai was -- city 27.50 mm, eastern suburbs 29.90 and western suburbs 27.49 mm, according to the BMC Disaster Control.
From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, the city notched rainfall -- city 26.24 mm, eastern suburbs 25.88 mm and western suburbs 17.74 mm.
Rain also pounded neighbouring districts under Red alert like Raigad, Thane and Palghar, and all schools were ordered closed for the second consecutive day in Thane and Palghar.
The IMD has forecast spells of heavy rain over the next four hours in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and the ghat sections of Pune.
