The Paragliding World Cup was inaugurated at Bir-Billing, Kangra, by R.S. Bali, Chairman of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation and Vice Chairman (Cabinet Rank) of the Tourism Development Board. The Chief Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Husbandry, Panchayati Raj, and Rural Development, Kishori Lal, joined as a special guest.
The eight-day event was launched with a flag-off ceremony at Billing. Bali expressed pride in Bir-Billing, highlighting it as a world-class paragliding destination admired globally for its unique and lengthy flight site. He emphasized that hosting an international competition under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu enhances Himachal’s reputation worldwide. The Chief Minister's vision, he noted, has been pivotal in establishing the state’s identity and promoting its progress.
With vast potential for adventure tourism, the state government is committed to supporting event organizers, thereby strengthening the local economy and providing invaluable exposure for local pilots to learn from international paraglider champions. Bali underscored that Himachal’s pristine beauty and spiritual heritage make Bir-Billing especially blessed, attracting visitors eager to experience its natural wonders and rich culture. Efforts are underway to develop amenities in such scenic regions and to explore untouched tourist sites across the state.
Bali announced a grant of ₹60 lakh for the Bir landing site, ₹7 lakh for additional facilities, and pledged ₹35 lakh for the event’s success, along with a lift installation at Kheer Ganga Ghat parking.
Chief Parliamentary Secretary Kishori Lal welcomed Bali, underscoring the immense tourism potential in Baijnath Assembly constituency. He credited the Chief Minister’s commitment to making the Paragliding World Cup in Baijnath a reality.
A peace havan was held for the safety and success of the competition, attended by foreign participants, who embraced Indian cultural traditions.
94 Pilots from 26 Countries Compete
The event sees 94 participants from 26 countries, including 32 Indian and 7 female pilots. Safety provisions include two helicopters, seven health teams with ambulances, and six rescue and retrieval teams led by experts from the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Mountaineering Institute in Manali.
Bir Carnival Showcases Himachal’s Culture
As announced by Chief Minister, a Beed Carnival will run from November 6 to 8 at the landing site, featuring cultural programs each evening to offer international guests a taste of Himachal’s vibrant heritage.
