A 17-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed to death by a group of bike-borne youths in Radhe Market, Sector 41, Chandigarh, on Thursday night. His friend, also aged 17, sustained serious injuries in the attack and is undergoing treatment at Sector 16 Hospital. His condition is reported to be out of danger.
The deceased, identified as Lalit alias Moksh, was a resident of Sector 41 and a Class 12 student. He was the only son of his family. His friend, Jashan, is a resident of Badheri.
According to information, the incident took place around 10:30 pm when the two teenagers were sitting in the market to eat something. More than a dozen youths riding motorcycles were reportedly seen moving around the market before some of them stopped, got off their bikes and attacked the two boys with knives.
The victims sustained stab wounds to their heads, abdomens and backs. The sudden attack left shopkeepers in shock, and no one reportedly dared to intervene.
Shopkeeper Takes Injured Boys to Hospital
Navneet Chawla, president of Radhe Market in Sector 41, said he was preparing to close his shop when the incident occurred. He immediately informed the police control room.
However, as both teenagers were bleeding heavily, Chawla decided not to wait for the police and took them to Sector 16 Hospital in his own vehicle. Doctors declared Moksh dead on arrival, while Jashan was admitted for treatment. His condition is said to be stable and out of danger.
Family Alleges Police Inaction Over Earlier Dispute
The victim’s family alleged that Moksh had an altercation with some youths two days earlier over a Ramleela-related issue. According to the family, they had informed Police Station-39 about the dispute but claimed that no action was taken.
Following Moksh’s death, the family has demanded strict action against the accused and an investigation into the earlier complaint.
Questions Raised Over Police Presence
The incident has also raised questions among local shopkeepers about police presence in the area. A police beat box is reportedly located around 500 metres from the crime scene, prompting concerns over how the attackers managed to carry out the assault and escape.
However, DSP Dheeraj Kumar said police personnel had been deployed near the Ramleela event being held a short distance from the spot. He explained that the attackers chose a location some distance away from where the police force was stationed.
The DSP said the accused had been identified and would be arrested soon. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
