A giant Bighead Silver Carp weighing 28.5 kilograms was caught in the Gobind Sagar Lake of the Bhakra Dam early Tuesday, bringing excitement among fishermen and fish traders in the region. The massive fish was brought to Kohli Fish Company in Nangal for sale, where large numbers of people gathered to see the rare catch.
Bannandeep Singh Kohli, Managing Director of Kohli Fish Company, said the fish was caught in the fishing net of Vijay Kumar in the Saloa area of Gobind Sagar Lake. After receiving information about its extraordinary size and weight, the fish was transported to Nangal for auction.
According to Kohli, a bidding process was conducted for the fish, and it was eventually purchased by a reputed school located in Una district of neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.
He further revealed that around seven quintals of fish were harvested from Gobind Sagar Lake on Tuesday alone. The increasing availability of Catla, considered a premium-grade fish, is also being viewed as a positive sign for the local fishing community.
A fresh consignment of Catla fish also arrived in Nangal on Tuesday. Preparations are underway to dispatch the stock to markets in Chandigarh, Delhi and Assam, highlighting the growing demand for fish from the Gobind Sagar reservoir.
The latest catch has boosted the morale of fishermen, who see the rising fish population and improved yields from the lake as encouraging signs for the fisheries sector in the region.
