Tensions between Haryana Urban Local Bodies Department and employee unions have escalated into an indefinite strike. Around 30,000 civic workers across the state have stopped work from today after marathon talks in Chandigarh failed to yield any resolution.
The prolonged meeting between senior officials and union leaders ended without consensus, prompting workers to intensify their agitation.
The strike is being led by a joint front of employee unions under the leadership of Naresh Shastri, who heads both the Haryana Sarv Karamchari Sangh and the Municipal Employees Union. An 11-member delegation had met Urban Local Bodies Department Commissioner and Secretary Ashok Meena, presenting their demands firmly during negotiations.
However, the absence of any concrete assurance from the government led to a breakdown in talks.
Key Demands of Employees:
Regularisation of contractual sewerage workers
Immediate abolition of the contract system in sewerage services
Minimum monthly wage of ₹30,000 for sewerage staff
Reinstatement of 3,480 terminated workers in Gurugram and withdrawal of dismissal orders against 26 union leaders
With essential civic services likely to be affected, the strike is expected to significantly disrupt sanitation and sewerage operations across the state in the coming days.
