Punjab government has uncovered a suspected Goods and Services Tax (GST) fraud involving approximately ₹425 crore, following an investigation into transactions worth ₹2,450 crore by a transport company, State Excise and Taxation Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said.
Cheema said the action was carried out by the GST Department under the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann as part of the state government's efforts to crack down on tax evasion and safeguard government revenue.
According to the minister, the suspected tax fraud came to light during an investigation into financial transactions worth ₹2,450 crore conducted by a transport company. The probe has revealed the involvement of 62 firms operating across different states in the country, including around 25 firms based in Punjab.
The minister said the findings highlighted the need for strict monitoring of financial transactions and stronger action against those involved in tax-related irregularities.
Cheema reiterated that the Punjab government would not tolerate tax evasion and warned that strict legal action would be taken against those found guilty of violating tax laws.
The state government has maintained that efforts to detect GST irregularities and prevent revenue losses will continue. The investigation into the case is expected to help authorities establish the extent of the alleged fraud and determine the responsibility of the firms involved.
