A 75-year-old woman was allegedly murdered after unidentified assailants entered her house in Pathankot and attacked her with a heavy iron rod. The victim, identified as Asha Mahajan, wife of Subhash Chandra Mahajan, sustained serious injuries to her head, face and neck.
The incident took place on Monday night between around 9 pm and 9:15 pm, when Asha Mahajan was alone at home. Her husband, who runs a grocery shop at Shahpur Chowk, and their son had gone to the shop.
According to neighbours, screams coming from the house alerted local residents. As the main door was locked from inside, neighbours broke it open and entered the house. They found blood scattered on the floor and Asha Mahajan lying seriously injured.
Residents rushed her to a private hospital in a vehicle, but she died on the way due to the severity of her injuries.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the attackers may have entered the house through the roof. Police suspect that they locked the main door from inside after entering and later escaped through the rooftop route.
The family had installed CCTV cameras at the house for security. However, after the incident, both the CCTV camera and DVR were found removed. Police suspect that the attackers may have known about the surveillance system and attempted to destroy potential evidence.
Following the incident, Pathankot SP (D) Jagdish Attri, CIA Inspector Mandeep Salgotra and local police station SHO Davinder Kashni reached the spot with their teams.
The police secured the crime scene and called in a forensic team. Investigators collected fingerprints, blood samples and other evidence from the house. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the murder and working to identify and apprehend the accused.
