A devastating road accident on the Ferozepur Highway in Punjab's Fazilka district claimed the lives of eight people and left 15 others seriously injured early Friday morning. The collision occurred around 5:30 a.m. when a pickup vehicle carrying members of a family and their relatives collided head-on with a trailer near Hussain Shah village.
According to reports, residents of Malikzada village were on their way to Dera Beas to immerse the ashes of a deceased family member. Around 25 to 30 people were travelling in the pickup when the accident took place.
The impact of the collision was so severe that passengers inside the vehicle were thrown against each other. Five people who were sitting in the tool box structure mounted on top of the pickup were hurled forward, smashing through the windshield of the trailer and landing inside it. All five died on the spot. The deceased include a 13-year-old girl.
Several other occupants sustained serious injuries. Nine critically injured victims were referred to Faridkot for advanced medical treatment.
Following the incident, Ferozepur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bhupinder Singh reached the accident site. Police took the bodies into custody and sent them for post-mortem examination in Ferozepur.
The front portion of the pickup was completely mangled in the crash, highlighting the intensity of the impact. Panic and chaos erupted at the scene as cries for help filled the area. Local residents and passersby immediately launched rescue efforts and helped transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Police have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
