Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is holding protests across Punjab on Tuesday against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the presence of three BJP MPs at the funeral of Sajjan Kumar, who was convicted in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
In Amritsar, AAP leaders and workers staged a protest outside the residence of BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh. Heavy police deployment was made in the area to maintain law and order during the demonstration.
AAP leaders said the presence of three BJP MPs at Kumar’s funeral raises questions, given his conviction in a case linked to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The party has demanded that the BJP clarify its position on the matter.
AAP MLA from Amritsar Central, Dr Ajay Gupta, accused the BJP of indulging in vote-bank politics. He said Sajjan Kumar had been convicted in connection with the killings of Sikhs during the 1984 riots in Delhi and had been sentenced to life imprisonment.
Gupta questioned why BJP leaders attended Kumar’s funeral to pay their respects despite his conviction, saying their presence has raised serious concerns among the Sikh community.
