Jalandhar unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) staged a protest at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk on Thursday against charges allegedly being imposed on UPI payments above ₹2,000.
The protest was organised following a call given by the AAP’s Jalandhar unit. However, the demonstration saw a limited turnout, with no senior party leader attending the protest.
Mayor Vaneet Dhir, Deputy Mayor and AAP Cantt Halqa in-charge Rajwinder Kaur Thiara, along with young party workers, participated in the demonstration and burnt an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During the protest, youth, women and middle-aged party workers were seen raising slogans in separate groups. The demonstration, held at the busy city intersection around 1:30 pm, also saw several workers recording videos and uploading them on social media.
Women workers were seen looking for shade amid the afternoon heat, while young party workers continued raising slogans in their respective groups.
After burning the effigy, Mayor Vinit Dhir, the Deputy Mayor and other AAP leaders alleged that the Centre had imposed an additional burden on traders and demanded that the charges on online payments above ₹2,000 be withdrawn.
