Punjab Newsline, Fatehgarh Sahib-

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday organised a massive protest in district Fatehgarh Sahib in support of MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) workers. The protest was led by constituency MLA Lakhbir Singh Rai and State President of the SC Wing, Gurpreet Singh GP. On this occasion, slogans were raised against the Modi-led Central government’s anti-workers and anti-Punjab policies.

Addressing the gathering of protesters, MLA Lakhbir Singh Rai said that the Modi government is indulging in politics by renaming MGNREGA as Vikisit Bharat - Guarantee Rozgar Ajeevika Mission Gramin (VB-G RAM G) in order to divert attention from real issues and unemployment. “Ever since the BJP government came to power at the Centre, Punjab has been continuously discriminated against. After its defeat in the farmers’ movement, the Modi government has developed hatred towards the people of Punjab, the latest example of which is tampering with the very character of a people-centric scheme like MGNREGA. Under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann, a fight will be waged at every level for the rights of Punjab,” he added.

AAP SC Wing State President Gurpreet Singh GP said that over the past 12 years, the Modi government has left no stone unturned in economically weakening Punjab. “The Centre not only failed to fulfil its promises made to youth, women and industries, but instead created obstacles in development by withholding Punjab’s funds. If the harassment of MGNREGA workers is not stopped, the party will launch a fierce agitation across the entire Punjab,” he affirmed.

During the protest, State President of the Bharatiya Kisan Mazdoor Ekta Maha Sangh (Reuna), Balwinder Singh Chanarthal, also condemned the Central government’s decision and pledged to continue the struggle until the law is repealed.

The protest was attended by constituency Youth President Dilpreet Singh Bhatti, Harpreet Singh Panjoli (District President, SC Wing), Baldev Singh Bhall Majra, Avtar Singh Thekedaar, Ramesh Kumar Sonu, Councillor Asha Rani, Satbir Singh Jalla, Gurveer Singh Jalla, Bahadar Jalal, Harmesh Punnia, Jagjit Singh Reuna, Gurmeet Singh Bajwa, Gurpreet Singh Gunian Majri, Balveer Sodhi, Amarinder Singh Mandofal, retired SDO Jagpal Singh, Kulwinder Singh Dera, Reena Rani, Baljinder Singh Gola, Preet Brahman Majra, Sarpanch Gurdeep Singh, Sarpanch Rajinder Singh Kharoudi and Jaswinder Singh Reuna, along with a large number of labourers and women from various villages.
