An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Punjab Police was shot dead by unidentified assailants during a night patrol in Amritsar. The incident took place around 2:30 am near Dana Mandi when ASI Harjit Singh, posted at Gate Hakiman Police Station, was patrolling the area on a motorcycle.
According to police, unknown attackers opened fire on the officer, leaving him critically injured. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Amritsar, where he later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Following the incident, senior police officials reached the spot and launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Meanwhile, claims surfaced on social media that the terrorist outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH) had taken responsibility for the shooting. However, Punjab Police has not officially confirmed the authenticity of the claim.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed grief over the death of the officer and announced a financial assistance of ₹1 crore for the bereaved family.
Paying tribute to the slain officer, Mann said ASI Harjit Singh's bravery, courage and unwavering commitment to duty would always be remembered, adding that he made the supreme sacrifice while serving the people of Punjab.
