Gharinda Police Station in Amritsar has arrested two alleged drug smugglers and recovered 1 kg 147 grams of heroin, including packing material, from their possession. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, and further investigation is underway.
According to police officials, a Gharinda police team was conducting patrol duty near the T-point Attari on Sunday when it received a confidential tip-off. The information suggested that Gurpreet Singh alias Gopa, a resident of Naushahra Dhala, and Amandeep Singh, a resident of Dhodhiwind and presently staying in Attari, were walking towards the Defence Canal to deliver a consignment of heroin.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the police set up a barricade at the specified location. After some time, the two suspects arrived at the spot and were intercepted by the police. The operation was carried out in the presence of DSP Yadwinder Singh of Attari Sub-Division.
During the search, police recovered 1 kg 147 grams of heroin from the accused. Both men were immediately taken into custody.
Police have registered a case under Sections 21-C, 29 and 61/85 of the NDPS Act. Officials said that ASI Lakha Singh is leading the investigation. The accused are being questioned to determine the source of the heroin and the intended recipients of the consignment.
Police believe the interrogation could provide crucial leads about other individuals involved in the drug trade and the larger trafficking network operating in the region.
