Gharinda police have arrested two alleged drug smugglers and recovered 10 kg and 22 grams of heroin from their possession.
The arrested accused have been identified as Navsumit Singh alias Manpreet Singh, a resident of Khaira village under Gharinda police station, and Balwinder Singh alias Donny, a resident of Pakka Qila, Jhabal, in Tarn Taran district.
According to ASI Rajbir Singh, he was patrolling with his police team when they reached the government gardens near Attari to check suspicious persons.
During the operation, an informer tipped off the police that the two accused were allegedly involved in large-scale heroin trafficking in the area. They were reportedly carrying a huge consignment of heroin on a motorcycle and heading towards Amritsar's GT Road via the road alongside the Defence Drain from Rodawala Kalan village.
Acting on the tip-off, the police set up a checkpoint near the T-point at Attari. Shortly afterwards, they intercepted a black Splendor motorcycle bearing registration number PB02 S 3587, carrying two men matching the description provided by the informer.
During a search, the police recovered 10.22 kg of heroin, wax packets and two mobile phones from their possession. The motorcycle was also seized.
A case has been registered against both accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is underway to establish the source of the recovered heroin and identify possible links in the drug trafficking network.
