Amritsar Commissionerate Police has busted two major cross-border smuggling networks in a crackdown on drug trafficking and illegal arms smuggling. Five accused have been arrested, and police have recovered seven illegal pistols and 2 kg 30 grams of heroin from their possession.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused arrested in the arms case were allegedly in contact with smugglers operating from abroad.
According to police, they were planning to procure illegal weapons through foreign handlers and supply them in the Amritsar and Tarn Taran regions.
Authorities are now investigating the accused’s links with overseas smugglers and the broader network involved in the procurement and distribution of illegal weapons.
Two separate FIRs have been registered at Islamabad Police Station and Sultanwind Police Station in Amritsar. Investigators are trying to identify other individuals connected to these networks and determine the routes through which the consignments of drugs and weapons were being transported into Punjab.
Police probing forward and backward links
Investigation agencies are examining both the forward and backward links of the arrested accused. Efforts are also underway to identify the alleged cross-border handlers and their local associates who were in regular contact with them.
Police officials said that further investigation could lead to the exposure of additional members of the network, as well as the entire supply chain used for smuggling narcotics and illegal arms into Punjab.
The crackdown is being seen as a significant step in Punjab Police’s ongoing efforts to dismantle organized cross-border crime networks operating along the international border.
