Punjab Police on Tuesday busted an interstate illegal arms smuggling module in Amritsar and arrested five accused involved in supplying sophisticated weapons to criminal networks.
During the operation, police recovered eight advanced pistols along with a large quantity of live cartridges from the accused.
According to the Punjab DGP, preliminary investigation has revealed that the arrested suspects were in contact with a foreign-based smuggler through virtual numbers. The gang allegedly used drones to receive consignments of illegal weapons and narcotics from across the border before distributing them to criminal elements operating in Punjab.
Police officials said the smuggling network had been active for a long time and was involved in supplying illegal arms to organised crime groups. An FIR has been registered at Chheharta Police Station and further investigation is underway to trace the entire network and identify other links connected to the racket.
