Amritsar Urban Police have arrested five accused allegedly linked to a cross-border network involved in the smuggling of narcotics and illegal weapons.
According to police, 21.299 kg of heroin, 970 grams of ICE (methamphetamine), one illegal .30 bore pistol, and four live cartridges were recovered from the possession of the accused.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the kingpin of the gang was in direct contact with a smuggler operating from abroad. The foreign-based handler allegedly facilitated the delivery of heroin and illegal weapons into India through the international border, after which the contraband was to be supplied further within the country.
A case has been registered at Airport Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
Police officials said efforts are being made to trace the forward and backward links of the cross-border smuggling network. Investigators are also trying to determine the source of the seized drugs and weapons and identify the intended recipients of the consignment.
The role of other individuals who may be connected to the network is also being examined. Police said the investigation is continuing to uncover the wider interstate and cross-border connections involved in the supply of narcotics and illegal firearms.
