Amritsar Rural Police on Tuesday arrested three people in connection with an alleged cross-border network involved in supplying illegal weapons and narcotics. The police said they recovered more than 10 kg of heroin, an AK-47 rifle, an AK-56 rifle, three magazines and 10 live cartridges from the accused.
According to the preliminary investigation, the accused were allegedly in contact with smugglers based in Pakistan. Police said the suspects had received consignments of heroin and weapons from across the border through drones.
Investigators suspect that the accused were preparing to further distribute the consignment when they were intercepted. The three were arrested on the basis of specific intelligence while they were allegedly on their way to deliver the consignment.
The accused have been identified as Bikramjit Singh, a resident of Ghumanpura in Chheharta; Sandeep Singh, a resident of Barar village; and his wife Kamaljit Kaur.
A case has been registered at the Gharinda police station under relevant sections of the Arms Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The three accused were produced before a court and have been sent to three-day police remand for further questioning. Police are investigating the source of the consignment, its intended recipients and the wider network allegedly operating across the border.
