India clinched two gold medals within the span of just one minute at the Asian Games on Friday, with boxer Ankush Panghal winning gold in the men’s 80kg category and wrestler Sujeet Kalkal claiming the top spot in the men’s 65kg freestyle event.
Kalkal secured his gold medal just a minute before Panghal’s victory, giving India back-to-back gold-medal triumphs.
Earlier, Indian boxers Parveen Hooda and Lovlina Borgohain also won gold medals in the women’s 65kg and 75kg categories, respectively. With their victories, three Indian boxers have become Asian Games champions for the first time.
India also won gold in the women’s recurve archery team event earlier in the morning.
With these victories, India’s gold-medal tally rose to 15, taking the country to fifth place in the overall medal standings.
The 2026 Asian Games have also produced India’s best-ever performance in boxing in terms of gold medals. Indian boxers have won a total of six medals — three gold and three bronze.
India’s previous best gold-medal haul in boxing at the Asian Games came in 2010, when the country won two gold medals as part of a nine-medal tally. In the 2022 Asian Games, Indian boxers won four medals — one silver and three bronze.
