A serving Indian Army personnel has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife by driving a car into the Bhakra Canal near Patiala, Punjab. The accused reportedly survived by swimming out of the canal, while his wife drowned after becoming trapped inside the vehicle.

According to police, the incident took place on the night of June 23 near the Pasiana Bridge over the Bhakra Canal. Following a dispute, the accused allegedly took his wife to the canal in a car and deliberately drove the vehicle into the water.

The victim, identified as Ramandeep Kaur (30), was unable to escape from the submerged vehicle and died due to drowning. The accused, Happy Singh (32), a resident of Bajewala village in Mansa district and a serving Army soldier, managed to swim to safety.

After receiving information about the incident, police reached the spot and, with the help of divers, recovered Ramandeep Kaur's body from the canal.

The case was registered on the complaint of the victim's brother, Gurjeet Singh, who alleged that his sister's death was not an accident but a pre-planned murder. Based on his statement, Pasiana police booked Happy Singh on charges of murder and subsequently arrested him.

Police said the couple had entered into a love marriage in 2024 but had reportedly been facing marital problems for a long time. According to the complaint, frequent disputes occurred between the couple, allegedly due to tensions involving the husband's family. The victim's relatives claimed that Happy Singh's parents were unwilling to accept Ramandeep Kaur into their household, leading to repeated arguments.

As the relationship deteriorated, the couple had reportedly been living separately in Sangrur for some time.

Investigators are now examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and the exact motive behind the alleged murder. Further investigation is underway.
