The murder of Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjit Singh has taken a significant turn with the emergence of the first CCTV footage linked to the case. The footage, which is being examined by investigators, reportedly shows suspected assailants riding an Activa scooter as they leave the Dana Mandi area shortly after the incident.
ASI Harjit Singh, posted at Gate Hakiman Police Station and serving with the Police Control Room (PCR) unit, was on duty in the Dana Mandi area on Thursday night when he was attacked. According to police, unidentified assailants opened fire on the officer at around 12:30 am, killing him on the spot.
The newly surfaced CCTV footage captures individuals moving out of the market area, while other commuters can also be seen passing through the location. Police are scrutinising the footage and collecting additional evidence to identify those involved in the attack.
Following the killing, speculation surfaced regarding the possible involvement of Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH) and Pakistan-based gangster Shahzad Bhatti. However, Punjab Police has not officially confirmed any such links and has maintained that the investigation is ongoing and all angles are being examined.
Meanwhile, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced a financial assistance package of ₹2 crore for the slain officer’s family. Of the total amount, ₹1 crore will be provided through HDFC Bank insurance coverage, while the remaining ₹1 crore will come from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
