The man accused of shooting an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in Amritsar was killed in a police encounter on Saturday, police said. The accused, identified as Karanbir Singh, had reportedly escaped from police custody a few days ago.
According to police officials, a team searching for the accused tracked him down in a rural area of Amritsar. When officers attempted to surround him near the Kandowalia area, he allegedly opened fire on the police team.
During the exchange of fire, a police personnel sustained a bullet injury. Police retaliated, and Karanbir Singh was seriously injured in the encounter. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors later declared him dead.
Police said that around 14 rounds were fired from both sides during the encounter. Following the incident, a heavy police force was deployed in the area, and security was tightened.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the entire sequence of events, including the exchange of gunfire, the circumstances surrounding the accused’s death, and the injury suffered by the police personnel.
