The two-day strike by sanitation and sewerage workers in Bathinda came to an end on Monday after the Municipal Corporation assured employees that their key demands would be included in the agenda of the upcoming General House meeting.
The workers, who had been staging a protest outside the Municipal Corporation office, called off their strike after being handed a copy of the proposed agenda related to their demands. Following the assurance, all sanitation and sewerage employees returned to work.
Door-to-door garbage collection services also resumed across the city, and the process of clearing heaps of waste accumulated on roads and public places began immediately. Municipal officials said garbage collection from around 65,000 households would now be carried out as normal.
Earlier in the day, a meeting was held between officials of the sanitation and sewerage workers’ unions and civic authorities under the leadership of Assistant Commissioner Sunil Mehta. During the discussions, officials agreed to include a proposal regarding the in-sourcing of outsourced employees in the agenda of the next General House meeting.
Chief Sanitary Inspector Sandeep Kataria handed over a copy of the proposed agenda item to representatives of both unions. Workers were assured that the proposal would be presented before the House in the coming days and, if approved, would be forwarded to Chandigarh for further clearance.
The assurance helped break the deadlock, paving the way for the restoration of essential sanitation services across Bathinda.
