A dispute between two students over a bench at Twinkle Model High School in New Prithvi Nagar, Jalandhar, turned violent on October 6, leaving a Class 10 student seriously injured. The injured student, identified as Akashdeep, allegedly suffered an abdominal injury after another student attacked him with chairs. He reportedly required 22 stitches and underwent surgery.
The incident came to light again on Thursday when Akashdeep’s family reached the school and protested over the medical expenses. His father, Jasbir Singh, alleged that the school administration had initially assured the family that it would bear the treatment costs but later refused to do so.
According to Jasbir Singh, his son is a Class 10 student and performs well academically. He said teachers would sometimes call him to school early. On October 6, Akashdeep was arranging benches in the classroom when an argument broke out with a Class 9 student over an additional bench kept in the room.
Jasbir Singh alleged that Akashdeep asked the other student to wait until the teacher arrived before taking the bench. The argument escalated, following which the student allegedly attacked Akashdeep with chairs, causing serious injuries.
Student undergoes surgery
Akashdeep was rushed to Sacred Heart Hospital following the incident. According to his father, doctors informed the family that there was serious internal injury and bleeding, following which surgery was performed. The student received 22 stitches on his abdomen.
Jasbir Singh alleged that the school administration initially assured the family that it would take responsibility for the treatment expenses but later told them that the child’s family would have to bear the costs themselves. He accused the school of failing to support the injured student.
School says student’s condition stable
School teacher Meera said that a clash had taken place between the two students and that one student was injured and admitted to hospital for treatment. She said the student’s condition was stable after undergoing surgery.
The teacher further claimed that the student’s family arrived at the school along with other people and put pressure on the school regarding assistance for the injured student.
Following the protest, the school authorities reportedly sent the students home and closed the school gate to prevent the situation from escalating.
Police call both families
Police said the families of both students have been called to the police station. Statements from both sides will be recorded, following which further action will be taken, police said.
