A land dispute turned deadly in Punjab’s Gurdaspur after a man allegedly shot dead his younger brother and sister-in-law in a shocking double murder late Tuesday night.

The incident took place in Nainkot village under the Kahnuwan police station area. The victims were identified as Ajayab Singh (52) and his wife Kamal Kaur (50). Police have arrested the accused, Amarjit Singh alias Amba, who is the elder brother of the deceased.

According to police and family members, the killings were linked to a long-running dispute over ancestral property. The family had reportedly returned from Tata Nagar in Jharkhand to their native village years ago and had been living separately in different localities.

Relatives said the three brothers had been involved in a dispute over the division of nearly nine killas of ancestral land. Several village panchayat meetings were held over the past year to settle the matter, but no agreement could be reached.

As per initial investigation, Amarjit Singh allegedly first followed his younger brother Ajayab Singh while he was out for an evening walk near a poultry farm on the outskirts of the village and shot him dead on the spot. The accused then allegedly entered the victim’s house and opened fire on Kamal Kaur, killing her inside the residence.

Police from Bhaini Mian Khan police station, led by SHO Gurnam Singh and DSP Kulwant Singh Mann, reached the spot soon after receiving information and began an investigation. The accused was later arrested from his house.

DSP Kulwant Singh Mann confirmed that the double murder was the result of a property dispute within the family. The bodies were sent to the Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Family members said the couple’s two sons were not present at home during the incident. One son lives in Australia, while the other works in Bihar. Both have been informed about the tragedy.
