A fresh case of alleged animal cruelty has surfaced in Chandigarh after the charred body of a dog was found on a roadside in Sector 28. Police and forensic experts reached the spot soon after receiving information and have launched an investigation into the incident.
According to officials, the exact cause of the dog's death is yet to be determined. Investigators are examining whether the animal died due to the fire or if it had already been killed before being set on fire. All possible angles are being explored.
The incident came to light between 10:00 pm and 10:30 pm on Tuesday when a passerby noticed a strong foul smell while passing through Sector 28. On approaching the area, the person found dry leaves and garbage burning beneath a group of trees, with a severely burnt dog lying in the flames. The passerby immediately informed the police control room.
A team from Police Station-26 reached the spot, but by then the dog had been completely burnt and was found dead. Considering the seriousness of the case, the police called in the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team to examine the scene.
Forensic experts conducted a detailed inspection and collected ash, burnt remains, and other samples for scientific analysis. The entire site was also photographed and videographed to preserve evidence for the investigation.
Police officials said that only the forensic report will confirm whether the dog was burnt alive or had died before the fire started. Meanwhile, investigators have intensified their probe in the surrounding area.
CCTV footage from Sector 28 and nearby locations is being scanned to identify who may have started the fire and how the dog ended up at the spot. Police are also questioning local residents, shopkeepers, and security personnel to determine whether anyone witnessed any suspicious activity around the time of the incident.
