Central Govt’s Decision to Withdraw the Dissolution of PU&39;s Senate and Syndicate is a Big Victory for Punjab, Punjabi Identity, and Students’ Struggle: Balbir Sidhu

Says, Govt must hold in-depth consultations with students, teachers, and intellectuals before taking such decisions

Punjab Newsline, Mohali :

The Central Gov has withdrawn its notification issued on October 28 regarding the dissolution of Panjab University’s Senate and Syndicate, thereby cancelling the earlier order. Senior Congress leader and former Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu termed this move a major victory for Punjab, Punjabiat, and the students’ struggle. He appreciated the support and unity shown by students, intellectuals, and political groups throughout this issue.

Viewing this decision as a triumph of Punjabi identity and people’s participation, Sidhu said that administrative decisions related to universities concern educational autonomy and transparency. Therefore, before taking such steps, the government must engage in deep consultations with students, teachers, and scholars. He added that imposed decisions not only affect students but also damage the reputation and cultural integrity of educational institutions.

Sidhu emphasized that in such matters, the government and university administration should work together to create balanced and transparent policies, keeping in mind the academic and professional growth of students. He noted that this issue is not limited to Panjab University alone, but serves as an example for all educational institutions, showing that government decisions made without dialogue and public participation cannot sustain in the long run.

Following the widespread protests and resistance, the Central Government revoked its earlier decision and cancelled the notification, a move now being celebrated as a victory by students, intellectuals, and the political community of Punjab.

Sidhu concluded that this is not just a victory for Panjab University, but a precedent for all educational institutions across the country.
