A 19-year-old couple allegedly died by suicide after coming under a train on a railway track in Chandigarh’s Ramdarbar area late Monday night. Both victims were residents of Chandigarh.

The deceased have been identified as Ashish, a resident of Mauli Jagran, and Priya, a resident of Hallomajra.

According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), information was received around midnight that a young man and woman had been hit by a train on the railway track in the Ramdarbar area. Both died on the spot.

Following the information, a team from the Sector 31 police station reached the spot. The railway police also arrived shortly afterwards and jointly inspected the scene.

The police called forensic teams to the spot during the night and also conducted videography of the crime scene. The bodies were taken into custody for further proceedings.

As the incident took place on a railway track, the Chandigarh Police returned after the initial investigation, while the further probe was handed over to the GRP.

Police said no suicide note was recovered from the spot. Therefore, the exact reason why the couple allegedly took the extreme step has not yet been established.

The GRP is questioning the families and friends of the deceased to ascertain the circumstances leading up to the incident. Police are also examining CCTV footage from routes leading towards the railway track to establish the sequence of events.

The investigation is currently underway.
