A 33-year-old man from Mauli Jagran allegedly died by suicide after struggling to cope with the breakdown of his eight-year-old love marriage. Chandigarh Police have registered a case against his wife, Komal, and one of her students, Sunny, on charges of abetment to suicide and launched an investigation.
According to the victim's family, Monu and Komal had known each other since school and later attended the same college, where they fell in love. Their families initially opposed their relationship, but eventually agreed to the marriage after the couple allegedly threatened to end their lives if they were not allowed to marry.
The couple married around eight years ago and have a six-year-old daughter. Family members said the relationship remained stable for the first few years before marital differences emerged.
Monu earned a living by driving an e-rickshaw, while Komal taught tuition classes from their home in Mauli Complex, Mauli Jagran. The family alleged that Komal developed a close relationship with one of her students, Sunny, which later turned into an affair. They claimed the issue created a rift between the couple, and despite repeated efforts to resolve the dispute, Komal left the matrimonial home with their daughter.
The family further alleged that around 15 days before Monu's death, Sunny arrived at their house with 15–20 youths, created a disturbance, and claimed he would take Komal with him. Police reportedly intervened at the time and defused the situation, though no case was registered.
Relatives said Monu became emotionally distressed after his wife left. A video recorded before his death reportedly shows him breaking down in front of his brother while speaking about his pain. They claimed he repeatedly tried to reconcile with his wife but was unsuccessful.
According to the family, Monu visited his in-laws' house on July 7 to meet his daughter. After returning home, he did not disclose what had happened. Following his death on July 22, police recovered a diary in which he allegedly wrote, "What happened to me on July 7 is something I cannot tell anyone."
Investigators have seized the diary and the video as part of the probe. Based on the available evidence, Chandigarh Police have registered a case against Komal and Sunny under Sections 108 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for alleged abetment to suicide.
Monu's mother claimed her son was more concerned about being reunited with his six-year-old daughter than restoring his marriage. She alleged that repeated requests to allow him to meet or keep his daughter were denied, and the fear of losing contact with her left him emotionally shattered.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and the allegations made by the victim's family are being verified. No conclusions have been reached regarding the accused's culpability at this stage.
