A 28-year-old fourth-year MBBS student died by suicide after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh, on Tuesday night.
The deceased has been identified as Karan Singh Sandhu, a resident of Sector 32. According to reports, before the incident, he sent individual "goodbye" messages to several close friends. Alarmed by the messages, his friends immediately tried calling him, but it was too late.
Karan was the son of Dr. Sarabjit Singh and Dr. Navreet Sandhu, who run a dental clinic in Sector 35. He had left home around 7 pm, telling his family that he was going to the hospital library and would return by 9 pm.
After reaching GMCH-32, Karan reportedly went to the library on the sixth floor of E-Block. Hospital staff said he briefly interacted with a security guard before heading upstairs. Around 8:20 pm, he sent the farewell messages to his friends, and approximately 10 minutes later, he allegedly jumped from the building.
Police have taken the body into custody and sent it to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination, which is scheduled for Wednesday. The body will be handed over to the family after the examination.
Investigators are examining Karan's mobile phone, messages, call records, and other digital evidence to determine the circumstances leading up to the incident. Meanwhile, the GMCH administration has also initiated an internal inquiry to understand the factors contributing to rising stress levels and incidents of suicide among medical students and doctors.
