Chandigarh Police arrested a 25-year-old man and recovered an illegal Chinese-made pistol along with five live cartridges during a night patrol operation in the city.

The accused has been identified as Jatin Kumar Chauhan, a resident of Sector-19B, Chandigarh. According to police, he is currently being questioned and his criminal background, contacts, and mobile phone records will be examined to determine whether he has any links to criminal gangs or other suspicious activities.

Police officials said that on the night of June 5, 2026, at around 10:50 pm, a team from Sector-3 Police Station was conducting routine patrolling in the Sector-8B area. During the patrol, officers noticed a young man standing under suspicious circumstances.

As the police team approached, the suspect appeared nervous and attempted to leave the spot quickly. Finding his behavior suspicious, the officers stopped him for questioning. When he failed to provide satisfactory answers, a search was conducted.

During the search, police recovered a pistol from his possession. Upon inspection, the weapon's magazine was found loaded with five live cartridges. The suspect identified himself as Jatin Kumar Chauhan.

Police asked him to produce a valid arms licence or any legal documents for possession of the weapon, but he failed to provide any permit or authorization. The pistol and ammunition were subsequently seized.

Further examination revealed that the recovered firearm was a Chinese-made pistol. The weapon, magazine, and all five live cartridges were sealed and taken into custody as per legal procedures.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and further inquiries are being conducted to ascertain the source of the weapon and any potential criminal connections of the accused.
