Chandigarh has achieved a major milestone in the global sports arena as the Asian Athletics Association has awarded the city the hosting rights for the 2027 Asian Relay Championship.

The prestigious event will be held in May 2027 and will feature participation from leading Asian countries.

This will mark the return of a major international sports event to Chandigarh after nearly 38 years. The last such event hosted by the city was the 1989 Asian Rowing Championship.

The decision was taken during the Asian Athletics Association Council meeting held in Hong Kong on Wednesday. Chandigarh’s bid presentation was jointly made by UT Home Secretary Mandeep Singh Brar and Competition Director of the Athletics Federation of India Ravinder Chaudhary.

During the presentation, the team highlighted Chandigarh’s world-class sports infrastructure, strong connectivity, well-planned urban layout, green environment, and vibrant sporting culture.

Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria welcomed the development and expressed happiness over the achievement. He said this is a proud moment for Chandigarh and will further strengthen the city’s identity as a hub for international sporting events.
