In a major boost for Indian athletics, Chandigarh has been selected to host the 2027 Asian Relay Championships, marking the city's return as a venue for a major international athletics event after nearly 37 years.

Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria unveiled the roadmap for the prestigious championship, announcing that the official hosting flag has been handed over to Chandigarh and preparations are already underway. The event is scheduled to be held in May 2027.

The championship is expected to attract more than 250 athletes from around 20 countries, making it one of the biggest international sporting events to be hosted by the city in decades. Chandigarh last hosted an athletics event of this scale in 1989.

Calling it a matter of pride for both Chandigarh and the nation, Kataria said the championship would significantly enhance the city's international sporting reputation while showcasing India's capability to host world-class athletics events.

The event is also expected to provide a valuable opportunity for local athletes from Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana to witness and learn from some of Asia's top track and field competitors.

The Chandigarh Administration believes the championship will play an important role in strengthening India's preparations for future international sporting events, including long-term Olympic ambitions.

Kataria emphasized that although the championship will be held in Chandigarh, it is a national event. He said several rounds of meetings have already been held with administrative and police officials, while discussions with authorities from Punjab and Haryana will soon be conducted to finalize operational and logistical arrangements.

He added that the objective is not only to ensure the successful conduct of the championship but also to prepare athletes from Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh to deliver strong performances on the international stage.
