Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Surya Kant visited Chandigarh on Saturday and inaugurated a newly constructed multi-level parking facility at the District Courts complex in Sector 43. Built at a cost of around ₹40 crore, the project is expected to significantly ease parking problems for lawyers, litigants, and visitors.
Addressing the gathering, Justice Surya Kant said he had requested Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria to allow him to speak in simple language. Referring to Kataria's remarks, he said that although he was born in Hisar, Chandigarh had shaped his professional life.
"Hisar may be my birthplace, but Chandigarh is my Karmabhoomi. My years of struggle were spent in this city, in these streets and in this atmosphere. Being here today is not merely an official duty but a deeply personal moment," the CJI said.
Speaking at the event, Chandigarh Administrator and Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria praised Justice Surya Kant's remarkable journey. He noted that Justice Surya Kant hailed from a small village in Haryana's Hisar district and earned his LLB with a gold medal before embarking on a distinguished legal career.
Kataria highlighted that Justice Surya Kant was appointed as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004, later served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, and was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019 before becoming the Chief Justice of India. He described it as a matter of pride that someone from the region now holds the country's highest judicial office.
