India continued its strong run at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, adding two more silver medals to its tally on the fifth day of competition. Athlete Gulveer Singh and weightlifter Harjinder Kaur delivered impressive performances late Tuesday night, taking India’s overall medal count to 12, including two gold medals.

The biggest highlight came from Gulveer Singh, who created history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000 metres. The 27-year-old produced a remarkable finish, moving from fourth place at the start of the final lap to secure the silver medal with a powerful sprint in the closing stages of the race.

Gulveer belongs to Sirsa village in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district and serves as a Naib Subedar in the Indian Army. He began running while preparing for army recruitment and later pursued athletics seriously after joining the Grenadiers Regiment in 2018. His historic podium finish is being seen as a major breakthrough for Indian long-distance running.

Earlier in the day, Harjinder Kaur won silver in the women’s 69kg weightlifting category with a total lift of 227kg. She registered a personal-best 101kg in the snatch and followed it up with 126kg in the clean and jerk, securing second place overall.

The gold medal in the event went to Canada’s Charlotte Simonneau, who lifted a total of 240kg, while Australia’s Nya Phoebe Heyman claimed the bronze medal with the same total of 227kg but finished behind Harjinder on countback.

India also received encouraging news from the boxing arena, where three Indian boxers won their quarter-final bouts to advance to the semi-finals, thereby assuring the country of at least three more medals in the Games.

Despite the double silver success, India slipped from eighth to ninth place in the medal standings. Australia continued to dominate the competition, leading the table with 35 gold medals and 80 medals overall.

With athletics, weightlifting, and boxing contributing crucial medals, India’s campaign in Glasgow is gathering momentum, and the country will now look to convert its strong performances into more gold-medal finishes in the coming days.
