A tragic accident occurred at the annual Pir Baba Jodwa Shah fair in Sunam town of Punjab's Sangrur district when an electric current reportedly spread near a golgappa stall, killing two people on the spot and seriously injuring four others.
According to eyewitnesses, the fair was being organized by the Pir Baba Jodwa Shah Management Committee and had attracted a large number of visitors. The incident took place at night when several people were standing near a golgappa stall. Suddenly, a strong electric current allegedly passed through an iron structure or exposed wiring in the area, electrocuting multiple people.
The deceased have been identified as Anmol, son of Rajinder Singh and a resident of Tohana, and Gurtej Singh, son of Gurcharan Singh and a resident of Kulara. The injured include Happy Singh, son of Satpal Singh from Moonak; Bittu Singh, son of Balvir Singh from Moonak; Anil Kumar, son of Munshi Ram from Tohana; and Lakhwinder Singh, son of Jagan Singh from Sunam.
Following the incident, local residents and police personnel rushed the victims to the Civil Hospital in Sunam. Doctors declared two victims dead on arrival, while three seriously injured persons were referred to a higher medical centre after receiving initial treatment.
Punjab Cabinet Minister Aman Arora reached the Civil Hospital in Sunam from Chandigarh along with his family soon after learning about the tragedy. He met the bereaved families, expressed condolences, and reviewed the condition of the injured. The minister also directed doctors to ensure the best possible treatment for the victims.
Arora said a high-level investigation would be conducted into the incident and warned that strict legal action would be taken if negligence by organizers or any other party is found during the probe.
He further announced that the Punjab Government would provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased and ensure complete medical support for those injured in the accident.
