Economy derailed, investment also suffered
Punjab Newsline, Chandigarh, March 22-
The serious impact of the farmers' movement on the economy and social structure of Punjab cannot be ignored. This movement badly affected not only the state but also the development process of the state. Not only this, its effects were also seen in the daily life of common people. Delay in land acquisition, stalling of projects, decline in investment, and damage to the transport sector have given a serious blow to the economy of Punjab. But now that the road at Shambhu border has been opened, the working class and business class as well as the industrialists who pass through here for their work have heaved a sigh of relief.
Following the 2020–2021 farmers' protests, land acquisition issues in Punjab have intensified, particularly concerning infrastructure projects like highways and expressways. Protests create a perception of instability, discouraging potential investors and businesses from establishing operations in Punjab.
The farmer protests have led to significant disruptions in land acquisition for infrastructure projects, particularly highways and expressways. Due to delays in land acquisition, key infrastructure projects, including those funded by the NHAI, have been terminated. For instance, NHAI had to cancel three projects worth over 3,000 crore.
