A four-hour meeting was held in Gurugram between Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal and a delegation of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) in an effort to resolve the ongoing deadlock between the Central government and farmers. The meeting continued until around 11 pm.
Thirteen farmer representatives from different states participated in the discussions and submitted a detailed charter outlining their 10 key demands to the Union Minister.
After the meeting, Union Minister Manohar Lal said the government would discuss the farmers’ demands with the concerned ministers and make efforts to get them resolved at the earliest. He also claimed that the farmers were currently satisfied with the government’s response.
However, farmer leaders maintained that they had received only assurances so far and would consider themselves satisfied only after their demands were actually implemented. At the same time, they described the government’s response this time as positive.
Farmer leader and secretary Hardeep Singh Gill said, “At present, we have only received assurances. Farmers across the country will be satisfied only when our demands are fulfilled. The coming days will show whether decisions are actually taken in the interest of farmers.”
Gill added that if two to four of their major demands are addressed within the next five to 10 days, it would give farmers confidence that the government was genuinely working in their interest.
