Kisan Mazdoor Morcha on Thursday launched a statewide “Rail Roko” agitation in Punjab, disrupting rail services at several locations as farmers and farm workers occupied railway tracks to press for their long-pending demands.
In Amritsar, protesters staged a sit-in on the railway track at Devidaspura, while the Shatabdi Express was stopped at Beas railway station as part of the agitation. Similar demonstrations were reported from Gurdaspur, Moga, Ferozepur and Sangrur, affecting train movement across the region.
Meanwhile, a meeting between senior Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, other farmer representatives, the IG Border Range and the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar was underway to discuss the farmers’ demands and the ongoing protest.
Separately, the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee blocked railway tracks at Malawala railway station in Ferozepur. Protesters began their sit-in on the Ferozepur–Jalandhar railway line at noon, leading to disruptions in rail traffic.
Punjab unit president of the committee, Sukhwinder Singh Sabhra, said the protest was being held to highlight long-pending demands of farmers and labourers. He urged both the Centre and the Punjab government to take the issues seriously and work towards a resolution.
