Google is widely regarded as the world’s largest search engine and is used by millions of people every day to find information on everything from recipes and medical queries to banking, shopping and travel. However, while Google Search is convenient, users should also be aware of certain privacy risks associated with their online search activity.
Depending on account settings, Google may save information about a user’s search activity. Searches, websites visited and other online interactions can contribute to a broader picture of a person’s interests, preferences and needs.
For example, someone repeatedly searching for information about a particular health condition, job, product or travel destination may reveal significant details about their interests through their search history. Repeated searches can gradually contribute to a detailed profile of a user’s online activity.
Incognito Mode Does Not Mean Complete Privacy
Many users believe that using Incognito Mode makes their online activity completely private. However, that is not the case.
Incognito Mode primarily helps prevent browsing history and certain local data from being stored on the device. It does not make a person completely anonymous online. Websites, network administrators and internet service providers may still be able to observe or collect information about internet activity, depending on the circumstances.
Check Your Google Privacy Settings
Users should regularly review privacy settings associated with their Google accounts, including Web & App Activity and My Activity. Depending on their preferences, users can turn off activity saving and delete previously stored search and activity data.
It is also advisable to avoid signing into a Google account on someone else’s device. If you do use another person’s device, make sure to sign out completely after use.
Being aware of what information search activity can reveal and regularly reviewing privacy settings can help users maintain better control over their digital privacy.
