Monsoon fury continued to lash Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, triggering widespread disruption across the state after torrential rain caused extensive damage to roads, power infrastructure and water supply systems.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, Dharamshala recorded the highest rainfall at 79 mm, followed by Jogindernagar (76 mm), Mandi (63.4 mm) and Shimla (54.6 mm) during the last 24 hours. The heavy downpour has severely affected normal life in several districts.
145 roads closed across the state
Officials said that as of 10 am on August 7, a total of 145 roads had been closed to traffic due to landslides, flooding and debris accumulation.
Mandi district: 66 roads closed
Kullu district: 31 roads closed
Sirmaur district: 28 roads closed
The continuous rainfall and frequent landslides have also disrupted essential services across the hill state.
Power and water infrastructure affected
State Emergency Operation Centre reported that 224 electricity transformers have become non-functional, including 182 transformers in Mandi district alone. In addition, 14 drinking water supply schemes have been disrupted, creating water shortages in several affected areas.
Authorities have deployed restoration teams, but ongoing rain is hampering repair operations in many vulnerable locations.
More heavy rain likely
The Meteorological Centre, Shimla, has warned that there is little possibility of immediate relief from the wet spell. Orange and Yellow alerts have been issued for August 10 and 11, with forecasts indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall in different parts of Himachal Pradesh.
Administration has advised residents and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from landslide-prone areas and follow weather advisories issued by local authorities.
