Punjab State Human Rights Commission has taken serious note of complaints regarding security concerns and alleged disorder along the popular ‘Gedi Route’ outside MCM DAV College in Sector 36, Chandigarh.
The commission has sought a detailed report from the Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) on the matter. The SSP has been directed to submit the report before the commission at least one week ahead of the next hearing.
Sector 36A resident Kulbir Singh Rana filed the complaint, alleging that traffic arrangements outside the college, particularly after college hours, are frequently affected. The complaint alleges that some unidentified motorists drive slowly and recklessly in the area, while groups of students also gather outside the college.
The complainant has raised concerns over the safety of female students travelling to and from the college. According to the complaint, some individuals allegedly engage in inappropriate behaviour, including passing sarcastic and objectionable remarks at female students and recording them without their permission.
The complaint further alleges that such activities continue until late at night, causing inconvenience and a sense of insecurity among residents living in the surrounding area.
Rana also referred to an alleged clash between two groups outside the college gate on August 6. According to the complaint, the police control room was informed around 2:35 pm and a PCR team was called to the spot.
The complainant has sought increased police presence and regular monitoring outside the college to improve security and maintain traffic discipline in the area.
