India added another medal to its tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as Amritsar weightlifter Lovepreet Singh delivered an impressive performance to win the silver medal in the men’s 110+ kg category.
The achievement sparked celebrations in his native village in Amritsar, where family members, relatives and villagers rejoiced with dhol beats, sweets and congratulatory gatherings.
Lovepreet Singh is also serving the nation as a sailor in the Indian Navy, making the accomplishment even more special for his community.
Village sarpanch Jugraj Singh said Lovepreet had brought pride to his family, village and the entire country. He added that the medal was the result of 10 to 12 years of hard work, dedication and struggle.
His father Kirpal Singh revealed that before leaving for the competition, Lovepreet had promised to return with a medal — a promise he successfully fulfilled. His mother Sukhwinder Kaur described the success as a blessing of Waheguru combined with her son’s relentless hard work.
In the competition, Lovepreet lifted 176 kg in the snatch and 212 kg in the clean and jerk, registering a total of 388 kg to secure the silver medal. He missed the gold by just 1 kilogram.
New Zealand’s David Andrew Liti won the gold medal with a total lift of 389 kg, while England’s Andrew Griffith claimed the bronze medal.
Lovepreet’s near-gold performance has been widely praised and is being seen as another significant boost for India’s weightlifting campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
