India secured its third gold medal at the Asian Games 2026 after the women’s kabaddi team defeated Iran 37-34 in a thrilling final in Nagoya, Japan, on Saturday.
With the victory, the Indian women’s kabaddi team extended its remarkable record of winning a medal in five consecutive editions of the Asian Games. India will have another chance to add to its gold tally later in the day when the men’s kabaddi team faces Iran in the final at 2:30 pm.
The gold medal was India’s fourth medal on the seventh day of competition. The country also added two silver medals and one bronze to its overall tally.
Long-distance runner Sawan Barwal delivered a historic performance by winning silver in the men’s marathon with a timing of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 37 seconds. It marked India’s first medal in the event in 44 years, with the last podium finish coming at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, where India won bronze.
In shooting, the Indian women’s team claimed silver in the 50m Rifle Three Positions event. The team comprised Aashi Chouksey, Tilottama Sen and Vidarsha Vinod. The medal took India’s shooting tally at the Games to 11, including one gold, five silver and five bronze medals.
Despite the latest gold medal, India remains 12th in the overall medal standings. The country’s total medal count has now risen to 27, comprising 3 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze medals.
