The Indian women’s hockey team will begin its campaign in the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 today with a crucial opening clash against China. The tournament is being jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands. India, placed in Pool D, will take on a strong Chinese side at Amstelveen in the Netherlands at 4:30 PM IST.
Led by captain Salima Tete, the Indian team combines experience with young talent. Veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia will be one of the key players for India. With 313 international appearances, Savita’s experience in major tournaments could prove crucial in the opening game.
India has entered the World Cup with a 20-member squad. A major highlight of the team is that 11 players will be making their World Cup debut. The match against China will therefore be an important opportunity for the young players to showcase their talent on one of the biggest stages in international hockey.
Ahead of the tournament, India also played a practice match against hosts the Netherlands. The team will play under the captaincy of Salima Tete and the guidance of Dutch coach Sjoerd Marijne. The coaching staff will look to ensure that the team maintains its composure and executes its plans effectively against China.
India’s squad includes Savita, Bichu Devi Kharibam, Ishika Chaudhary, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Lal Thantluangi, Jyoti, Shilpi Dabas, Nikki Pradhan, Sakshi Rana, Sunelita Toppo, Salima Tete, Neha, Deepika Soreng, Lalremsiami, Rutaja Dadaso Pisal, Navneet Kaur, Deepika, Ishika, Baljeet Kaur and Beauty Dungdung.
China will also enter the contest with a strong squad, led by captain Ou Zixia. The Chinese side will be looking to put pressure on India from the beginning and start its own World Cup campaign on a winning note.
For India, the focus will be on securing a positive result in the opening game and building momentum for the matches ahead. With a blend of experienced campaigners and World Cup debutants, the Salima Tete-led side will aim to make a strong statement in its first match of the tournament.
