The Indian stock market continued its downward trend on Thursday, October 1, marking the fourth consecutive session of decline. The benchmark Sensex fell around 750 points, or 1.03%, to trade at 71,700, while the Nifty declined by nearly 260 points, or 1.15%, slipping below the 22,360 level.

Selling pressure was particularly strong in auto and metal stocks, which emerged among the worst-performing sectors during the session.

The decline in equities was also accompanied by weakness in the Indian rupee. The rupee fell to around ₹95.98 per US dollar as the greenback strengthened in the currency market.

Government-owned banks reportedly attempted to support the rupee by selling dollars. However, the continued weakness in the domestic currency added to pressure on Indian equities.

Market sentiment remained cautious as investors assessed the impact of the weaker rupee and continued selling across key sectors.
