India has opened its medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 even before the opening ceremony, with star boxer Lovlina Borgohain securing a guaranteed medal after receiving a first-round bye into the women's 75kg middleweight semifinals.
The Olympic medallist from Assam is assured of at least a bronze medal, as Commonwealth Games boxing rules award bronze to all semifinalists who lose at that stage. As a result, India has confirmed its first podium finish before Lovlina even steps into the ring in Glasgow, Scotland.
Lovlina will begin her campaign on July 31, when she faces T.K.B.P. Tafaki in the semifinal. A victory will send her into the gold medal bout, while a defeat would still leave her with the already-guaranteed bronze medal.
The top-seeded Indian boxer received a direct entry into the semifinals because only five athletes are competing in the women's 75kg category. Under the tournament format, three boxers—including Borgohain—advanced directly to the last four, while the remaining two contested the lone quarterfinal.
