A major accident occurred in Kolkata’s Taratala area on Wednesday afternoon when the shed of an under-construction warehouse collapsed, killing 5 worker and trapping several others beneath the debris.
According to reports, around 50 to 60 labourers were working at the site when the structure suddenly gave way, burying many under a massive pile of rubble within seconds.
Given the seriousness of the incident, rescue operations have been launched on a war footing. Along with local authorities, Army personnel have also been deployed to assist in the rescue effort. Eyewitnesses said construction work was underway at the warehouse when the entire structure unexpectedly collapsed.
Rescue Operation in Full Swing
Local residents rushed to the scene after hearing cries for help and began initial rescue efforts. Police, fire brigade teams, and disaster management personnel soon arrived and launched a coordinated operation.
So far, six to seven workers have been pulled out of the debris and shifted to nearby hospitals. Several of the rescued workers are reported to be in critical condition. Rescue teams are using cranes to clear the rubble and gas cutters to remove heavy iron beams obstructing access to trapped workers.
Officials said distress calls could still be heard from beneath the debris, raising fears that more labourers remain trapped. The state government has opened a control room at Nabanna to closely monitor the situation and coordinate rescue efforts.
