A lady doctor in Jalandhar was found dead at her residence. In an alleged suicide case that has triggered serious allegations against her husband, with the victim's family claiming he had taken loans worth ₹2.5 crore in her name and was involved in an extramarital affair with a woman working at his hospital.
The deceased, Dr. Meenakshi, had reportedly been living separately from her husband, Dr. Piyush of National Eye Hospital, for nearly a year.
The incident came to light when her colleague arrived at her Kewal Vihar residence to pick her up for duty at a health centre in Kapurthala. After receiving no response, neighbours broke a window and found her lying unconscious inside the house before informing the police and family members.
Based on the complaint of the victim's father, Jalandhar Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against Dr. Piyush, who is currently absconding. A three-member medical board has been formed to conduct the post-mortem examination, while police continue to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
The victim's father alleged that his son-in-law had first taken loans of around ₹45 lakh in Dr. Meenakshi's name, with her paying the EMIs. He further claimed that she recently discovered loans amounting to nearly ₹2.5 crore had also been taken in her name when she approached a bank to finance the purchase of her own house.
According to the family, Dr. Meenakshi confronted her husband after learning about the alleged loans, following which he allegedly threatened her. Her father also accused Dr. Piyush of physically assaulting her on several occasions during their marriage.
The family further alleged that Dr. Meenakshi suspected her husband of having an affair with a woman employed at his hospital. They claimed she examined CCTV footage from the hospital, found evidence supporting her suspicion and shared the material with both her family and the police.
Meanwhile, the victim's mother questioned whether it was a case of suicide or murder, saying the family would wait for the post-mortem findings and police investigation before the actual cause of death becomes clear.
Police officials said the investigation is ongoing and further action will be taken based on forensic evidence, the post-mortem report and the findings of the inquiry.
