Heavy rainfall triggered a landslide in Punjab's Pathankot district on Monday, blocking the Narayanpur-Ladheti Road in the Dhar Kalan area after debris and rocks slid down from a hillside. The road closure has cut off several nearby villages from the city, causing significant inconvenience to residents and disrupting daily travel.
The continuous downpour also affected normal life in Dhar Kalan, where many schoolchildren were unable to attend classes due to the adverse weather. Rainfall was also reported in Amritsar, while Mohali remained under cloudy skies.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Punjab and Chandigarh for the next three days, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and intense rain spells in several districts.
According to Surender Pal, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh, changing weather conditions have intensified rainfall activity across the plains of Punjab, Chandigarh, and Haryana. Widespread rain is expected, with heavy showers likely to continue over the next two to three days.
Meteorologists said the monsoon trough has shifted southward, increasing cloud activity over northern India's plains and raising the likelihood of widespread rainfall across the region.
